Road to Sol Mountain
Your BC backcountry adventure begins with gravel roads. Sol Mountain Lodge takes you deep into the working wilderness.
All Roads Lead to Sol Mountain Lodge
The nuts and bolts of getting to any wilderness location involve some logistics and dedication. You need to use maps, time your travel, and pack for the road—no big deal. However, for anyone new to BC Forest Service gravel roads, the experience is a trip. When there is no helicopter access, the journey into a BC backcountry lodge is the beginning of your adventure.
Summer guests will enjoy the drive to Sol Mountain. The network of industrial access roads in our area is extensive, winding through valleys, up and over mountains and down into a different drainage. Creeks tumble past, remote lakes with campsites appear, and unexpected moments of beauty swing into view: bears, deer, owls and occasionally, moose. It’s populated and unpopulated at the same time. This is off-roading; fewer people, lots of space, unexpected discoveries, and an abundance of wilderness.
BC Forest Service Roads
About the gravel. BC Forest Service Roads (FSR) are working roads built and maintained by the industry. If you have a VHF radio with RR channels, bring it along. Expect to encounter traffic, use the pullouts and yield to equipment. Time is elastic. As the expanse of wilderness sinks in, let your mind relax and wander. Crank up some tunes, look out the window and watch the world go by. This is only the beginning.
Drive time to the lodge is 2.5 hrs from Revelstoke. Take the highway south toward the Arrow Lake Ferry, then just before reaching the terminal, turn right on Shelter Bay Road. Keep an eye out for our cheerful yellow signs at every intersection. Sol, this way. Be sure to stop for a swim at the Eagle Bay recreation site about 10 km into the trip and roll slowly over the Pingston Creek bridge for a great view of the spectacular box canyon below.
From Nakusp, the drive takes the same amount of time. Head to the Arrow Park cable ferry, a 15-minute drive south of town. Once you’re on the west side of the water, take Arrow Park Road (right) and settle in for the adventure as you wind north along Arrow Lake. We provide detailed directions in your trip info package, including the two-hour ferry closure from 12 – 2 pm. Yes, the pace is different. Working hours have a different tempo.
When you arrive at the lodge, drive in and drop off your gear. After your check-in is complete, return your vehicle to the guest parking area and let the full experience of your backcountry adventure take over. All roads lead to Sol is our way of saying that getting out in the mountains brings us back to nature’s rhythm. We unwind, rediscover the cycles of day and night, and relax because we are fulfilled. Winter or summer, the mountains are the hub.
